Impatient to Patient – A Work in Progress

impatient
Patience isn't just an old virtue – it's a game-changer. It helps us avoid irritation, frustration, and anger, acting as a secret weapon for staying composed in those moments when nothing seems to go as planned.

What is impatience?

By definition impatience is the lack of patience.

  • An intolerance of or irritability with anything that impedes, hinders or delays.

  • Restless and/or eager desire for relief, change or excitement.

Why are some people impatient?

People can become impatient due to the fast-paced nature of modern life and the instant gratification culture perpetuated by the wide range of media and technology available today. The ability to have almost anything instantly, with just a few clicks online, has fostered a desire for immediate results and responses in many aspects of life, leading to impatience when faced with waiting, whether in line, for a response, for people [the absolute worst] or in other situations. This impatience can manifest as anxiety, irritability, and discomfort, making it challenging to listen, learn new skills, or pursue long-term goals. It can also lead to impulsive and inconsiderate behavior, ultimately impacting relationships and causing unnecessary stress.

The pitfalls of impatience

Let’s talk about the downsides of being all antsy and impatient. Strap yourself in. When we’re in a hurry for everything, it can really mess with our vibes. Impatience can turn us into edgy, moody beings, making every little thing feel like a big deal. [It’s not like I’m writing from personal experience or anything] It’s like we’re constantly on the brink of a mini freak-out, right? And hey, that impatience doesn’t just stay in our heads – it can make us act all impulsive and inconsiderate, which isn’t a good look on anyone. Plus, have you ever seen impatience lead to a full-blown meltdown? Yeah, not pretty. It doesn’t fix anything and just adds more drama to the mix. And let’s not forget how it can put a strain on our relationships, as well as our health and well-being. Impatience – not a good time, right?

Impatience and anxiety – a sordid relationship?

So, check this out – it’s like anxiety and impatience are in cahoots, making life a bit more complicated. Studies have actually shown that when folks are feeling anxious, their patience levels can nosedive. It’s like they’re in a hurry all the time, even with themselves and others. And get this, sometimes what seems like impatience might actually be anxiety pulling the strings. It’s like anxiety is the puppet master, making us all antsy and quick to make snap decisions.

Picture this: you’re waiting for something, and it’s taking forever. That waiting game can amp up your stress levels, right? [Stop looking at me] It’s like your impatience is poking at your anxiety, making it go, “Hey, what’s taking so long?!” Then, your anxiety kicks in, and suddenly, you’re overthinking, feeling restless, and maybe even a bit panicky. It’s like a tag team of tension and unease. Plus, when you’re always in a rush and on edge, it’s no wonder your anxiety can skyrocket. So, yeah, impatience and anxiety – they’re like those pals who bring out the worst in each other, creating a whole lot of unnecessary drama.

"Experience has taught me this, that we undo ourselves by impatience. Misfortunes have their life and their limits, their sickness and their health."

The benefits of patience

Patience isn’t just a dusty old virtue. It’s a game-changer. When we’re patient, we dodge irritation, frustration, and anger. Plus, it’s a secret weapon for staying cool in those ‘nothing’s going to plan’ moments.
